Camping near Salzburg - The "Mozart and Festival Town"

The distinctive cityscape of Salzburg is dominated by "Hohensalzburg" Castle. In the last 900 years the fortress has provided protection and shelter to the city against assailants. Salzburg was founded in 696 on the ruins of the Roman settlement of Juvavum. The town and its surroundings became subsequently an independent ecclesiastical state, to which the town of Berchtesgaden temporarily belonged. Although Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was only engaged as Salzburg’s chief organist from 1777 to 1781, the city owes its reputation and fame still largely to the musician’s work. The annual "Salzburger Festspiele" Festival dedicated to the composer, which always takes place in July, is the major visitor attraction of the town.
